VoIP PAP2T Setup

Following are installation instructions for a VoIP telephone service at your home. For an introduction to this topic see Cheap home phone service: switch to VoIP.

What do you need?

  1. An Internet connection that can handle 100 kbps inbound and outbound for the voice connection.
  2. An "analog terminal adapter" (ATA) that connects between your Internet router and your home telephones. A popular adapter is the LinkSys PAP2T-NA, which costs about $54 at this writing (see PAP2T-NA at Buy.com for more info).
  3. An account at your VoIP service provider. Two VoIP carriers that I use and recommend are voip.ms and CallCentric.

PAP2T-NA ATA Installation

  1. Connect your home network router to the PAP2T's INTERNET port using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Connect a phone to the PAP2T's PHONE 1 port.
  3. Connect the power cord.
  4. Pick up the phone and dial **** to access the setup menu. Just keep dialing the *'s if you get a "fast busy."
  5. With pen and paper ready, press 110# to determine the PAP2T's network address. Enter the 110# slowly and the PAP2T will respond with something like
  6. Enter this web address on your computer's web browser to configure the PAP2T: http://192.168.x.x/admin/advanced
  7. Click on the "SIP" menu and do the following:
    a. Set "Handle VIA received" option to "yes",
    b. set "RTP Packet Size" to 0.020, and
    c. click the "Save Settings" button
  8. Click on the "Provisioning" menu and do the following:
    a. "Provision Enable" to "no",
    b. "Upgrade Enable" to "no", and
    c. click the "Save Settings" button

If Using voip.ms Also Follow These Steps (other carriers will need different settings)

  1. Click on the Line 1 menu make the following settings:
    a. "NAT Mapping Enable" to "yes",
    b. "NAT Keep Alive Enable" to "yes",
    c. "NAT Keep Alive Msg" should be blanked out,
    d. "Proxy" to dallas.voip.ms (or whatever "DID Point of Presence" you set on the voip.ms "Manage DID's" web page),
    e. "Display Name" to your name,
    f. "User ID" to the "SIP Username" on the voip.ms Account Information web page,
    g. "Password" to the SIP password that can be changed in the voip.ms "Account Settings" web page,
    h. "DTMF Tx Method" to "InBand",
    i. "Dial Plan" to: (<:1555>[2-9]xxxxxx|1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|*xx|*xx.|[34689]11|822|4443|4747|0|00|[2-9]xxxxxx|1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|4XXX|xxxxxxxxxxxx.)
    j. For the "Dial Plan" be sure to include the opening and closing parentheses; replace the 555 digits with the area code of your choice - this allows you to leave off your area code and just dial 7 digits.
    k. click the "Save Settings" button
  2. Log into your voip.ms account at https://www.voip.ms/m/login.php and confirm that you have the following settings:
    a. set "Device type" to "ATA device, IP Phone or Softphone",
    b. set "DTMF Mode" on voip.ms "Account Settings" to "INBAND", and
    c. on the "Account Information" page you can check whether your PAP2T has connected to the voip.ms network - if so it will show "Registered"
